How long does it take for cardiac surgery?

The duration of surgery may last from 3 hours to 6 hours depending on the procedure and the nature of surgery.

Open heart surgery is considered to be more painful than minimally invasive heart surgery. The open heart surgery includes an incision in the chest that comes with a recovery period of around 6 to 8 weeks.

On average the MICS takes a recovery period of around 2 to 4 weeks that can vary based on the age, health and genetics of an individual.

The average stay after the minimally invasive surgery is 3 to 5 days. Whereas, in case of open heart surgery the staying period can last up to 7 to 10 days.

Most of the patients after open heart surgery are kept in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for around 7 to 10 days. Whereas, in the case of minimally invasive surgery the patients are kept in a surgical ward for 3 to 4 days.

Generally, patients can start walking after 1 to 2 weeks of the heart surgery. However, it is important to avoid performing heavy activities.
